How can I adjust my water temperature if it is much higher than I feel it should be?

Scott Gamron Staff

When a new hot water heater comes from the factory , the maker usually pre-sets the temperature at 120F . This is the standard setting for the majority of households. A few of the older models permit you to set the thermostat at the medium setting.

The natural gas or lp models may be adjusted on the dial on the front. You can easily locate the thermostat for the electric models behind panels on the side of the tank. At times there are two separate controls. These may be adjusted to your preferred temperature. Keeping the water hot also reduces bacteria growth.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To prevent shock from any exposed electrical wires and before doing any work on the electric hot water heater, always turn off electricity on the water heater.
